1. Has the Boil Water Notice been lifted?

As of Thursday morning, June 29, the City of Coppell's Boil Water Notice has been lifted. 

The City of Coppell has received the water sample results from Trinity River Authority (TRA), and the samples meet Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) requirements. As a result, the City of Coppell has lifted the Boil Water Notice. Utility customers may once again use water as normal. 

On June 28, 2023, the TCEQ required the City of Coppell public water system (identification number 0570040) to issue a Boil Water Notice to inform customers, individuals, and employees that, due to a power failure and the resulting loss of water pressure in the public water system, the water from this public water system was required to be boiled prior to use as drinking water or for human consumption purposes. 

The City of Coppell has taken the necessary corrective actions to restore the quality of the water used for drinking water or human consumption purposes distributed by this public water system and has provided TCEQ with laboratory test results that indicate that the water no longer requires boiling prior to use as of Thursday, June 29, 2023. 

If water is flowing normally from faucets, there is no need for customers to flush water from lines prior to consumption. All water in the City of Coppell system is safe for human consumption. Some residents and businesses may notice a buildup of air in their water lines. In this case, utility customers are advised to open their faucets and flush the air from their lines for 10 minutes. 

All City of Coppell facilities, with the exception of the library, are operating at regular hours today, June 29. The Cozby Library is expected to open at noon on June 29.

2. Do I need to flush my pipes?

If water is flowing normally from faucets, there is no need for customers to flush water from lines prior to consumption. All water in the City of Coppell system is safe for human consumption. Some residents and businesses may notice a buildup of air in their water lines. In this case, utility customers are advised to open their faucets and flush the air from their lines for 10 minutes.

3. Can I wash my hands, shower, or bathe?

According to the CDC, you can use tap water and soap to wash hands during a boil water advisory. Be sure to scrub your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Then, rinse them well under running water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

You can also shower or bathe, but be careful not to swallow any water. Use caution when bathing babies and young children. Consider giving them a sponge bath to reduce the chance of them swallowing water.

4. Can I brush my teeth?

According to the CDC, you are advised against brushing your teeth with tap water that you have not boiled first. Brush your teeth with boiled (and cooled) or bottled water.

5. Do I need to throw out my ice?

According to the CDC, you should not use water from any appliance connected to your water line, including ice and water from a refrigerator.

6. Can my pets drink the water?

According to the CDC:

• Pets can get sick from some of the same germs as people or spread germs to people. Give pets bottled water or boiled water that has cooled.
• If bottled water is not available, bring water to a full rolling boil for 1 minute. After boiling, allow the water to cool before use.
• Boil tap water even if it is filtered (for example, by a home water filter or a pitcher that filters water).
• Do not use water from any appliance connected to your water line, such as ice and water from a refrigerator.

7. What caused the Boil Water Notice?

Due to a power outage at the Village Parkway Pump Station caused by a fallen power line, the City's water system fell below the required pressure, 20 psi. As a result, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) required the City of Coppell public water system (identification number: 0570040) to notify all customers to boil their water prior to consumption.

9. Where can I pick up bottled water?

Bottled water will be available to Coppell residents at the Cozby Library, 177 N. Heartz Road, beginning at 7 am on June 29. One case per household. Coppell Police Department will be directing traffic into the lot. To enter the lot please make a left into the parking lot from the northbound lane of Heartz Road from Park Valley Drive and exit the lot by turning right onto southbound Heartz Road. Remain in your car and staff will load water into the trunk.

10. Why is air coming out of my faucet?

City crews are working to flush the water system. As a result of the reduced water pressure that resulted from the power outage, residents and businesses should expect a buildup of air in their water lines. Utility customers are advised to open their faucets and flush the air from their lines.    

11. Can I wash dishes?

According to the CDC, you should use disposable plates, cups, and utensils, if possible. Household dishwashers generally are safe to use if: 1) the water reaches a final rinse temperature of at least 150 degrees Fahrenheit, or 2) the dishwater has a sanitizing cycle.

You should sanitize all baby bottles.

To wash dishes by hand:

• Wash and rinse the dishes as you normally would using hot water.
• In a separate basin, add 1 teaspoon of unscented household liquid bleach for each gallon of warm water.
• Soak the rinsed dishes in the water for at least one minute.
• Let the dishes air dry completely before using again.

12. Can I do laundry?

According to the CDC, it is safe to wash clothes as usual.

13. Can I drink filtered water?

According to the CDC, you should boil tap water even if it is filtered (for example, by a home water filter or a pitcher that filters water).

it is recommended that you use boiled (and cooled) water to wash fruits and vegetables. 

16. Will City facilities be open on June 29?

All City facilities, with the exception of the Cozby Library, will open at regular operating hours on Thursday, June 29, 2023. Use of water fountains and showers will be restricted until the Boil Water Notice has been lifted. 

The Cozby Library and Community Commons will have a delayed opening on Thursday, June 29, to allow residents to pick up bottled water. The library will open at noon on Thursday, June 29. 

17. Can I use water as normal?
