1. I have an easement on my property. What is it for? Who is responsible for maintaining it?

An easement is a nonpossessory right to use and/or enter onto the real property of another without possessing it. View the different types of easements:

• Access easement - grants access across the property to serve another property.
• Detention/retention - a drainage easement that is dedicated to cover detention ponds and underground detention structures.
• Drainage easement - this is for anything stormwater-related, including the following: Underground storm sewer including inlets and outfalls, above ground drainage, such as a channel or a flume.
• Floodplain - as property is developed, a drainage easement is dedicated to protect the floodplain.
• General Utility easement - this is for any underground or above-ground utility such as gas, electric, water, sewer, etc.
• Specific utility easement (such as an electric easement or water easement) - this is for that specific utility only (a gas line cannot be in a water easement).

2. Is my property in a flood zone?

Information on whether your property is in a flood hazard area can be found through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) resources:

• Search for an address on FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center website.
• Learn about the National Flood Insurance Program on FEMA’s FloodSmart website.

3. There are markings on my property. Why are they there?
