Clean Fleet

The Fleet Services Division maintains in excess of 150 on-road vehicles and over 110 pieces of off-road equipment. Through the initiation of the Clean Fleet Vehicle Policy Ordinance in March of 2006, the City of Coppell has made great strides in the reductions of both fuelconsumption and targeted emissions, notably oxides of nitrogen (NOx) which contribute to ground-level ozone.

The Clean Fleet Vehicle Policy Ordinance addresses vehicle usage, refueling guidelines, routine maintenance, additional emission inspections for older vehicles, and other actions such as driver education including driving habits, daily inspections and correct tire pressures. The ordinance also includes a strict no-idling policy, and requires the procurement of new vehicles with reduced NOx emissions.

The City of Coppell currently operates 18 gasoline/electric hybrid vehicles in a variety of departments and operations. In 2001 The City purchased its first hybrid vehicle, a Toyota Prius. In subsequent years many varying hybrid models have been put into service. From sedans such as the Honda Civic Hybrid and the Ford Fusion Hybrid, to Pick-Up Hybrids and SUV's as in the Ford Escape Hybrid. All hybrid technology is considered when purchasing vehicles for the fleet.

Fleet Services has also instituted its lead-free wheel weight policy which forbids the use of lead wheel weights for the purpose of tire balancing. Additionally our tire inflation policy includes correct tire pressures placards for each vehicle plus operator training in that area.

The City of Coppell recently purchased new apparatus for the Fire Department. Working closely with the Fire Department, Fleet Services provided specifications which equipped these apparatus with the latest diesel engines which not only comply with the new stricter EPA 2010 Heavy-Duty Diesel Emission requirements, but also have proven to reduce fuel consumption by an average of 20%.
